How to Choose a Cancer Treatment Center

by | Mar 28, 2021 | Cancer Treatment, CyberKnife to Treat Cancer

If you have been diagnosed with cancer and are looking for the right cancer treatment center, you are not alone.

Cancer patients are often guided by their doctors, bombarded by advice from friends and family, and spend hours searching the internet.

They are looking for a cancer treatment center that will partner with them to provide the best possible care, outcome, empathy, and compassion.

“Oftentimes by the time patients come to us for a consultation, they have done their research. They are scared and they have read the statistics,” said Dr. Mark Pomper, board-certified radiation oncologist and the Medical Director at the CyberKnife Center of Miami. “The most important thing we like to convey is that to us they are not statistics, they are patients, unique patients with unique needs. We are not in the business of treating statistics.  We are in the business of treating patients effectively, efficiently and with compassion. That is what makes us different.”

Cancer Treatment Center Near Me

According to Cancer.Net, the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s patient information website, there are questions you should ask when looking for a cancer treatment center. Here are some of the questions on that list:

  • How much experience does that center have in treating your type of cancer?
  • How effective are the treatments?
  • Is the center close to your home or office?
  • Does it take your insurance?
  • What support services does it offer?
  • Who are the experts that will be managing your care?
  • Is it close to an airport, hotel and restaurants if needed?
  • Do they offer clinical trials?

And these questions just scratch the surface.

The American Cancer Society offers a worksheet to help guide patients through the process to find the right doctor for them. Here are more questions you should ask when you meet with a doctor who may be treating you.

  • Are you board certified?
  • What is your specialty and subspecialty?
  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many patients with my type of cancer have you treated in the past 12 months?
  • What are your hours?
  • Can I reach you outside regular hours?
  • Who else will be on my cancer care team?
  • Can I bring someone with me to my treatments?

“You want to go to a cancer treatment center that can answer all of your questions,” said Dr. Pomper.  “We want our patients to know they can ask us anything. No question is silly. If a doctor or center will not answer all your questions, seek a second opinion. Make sure you are comfortable with the doctors and staff at the center you choose.”

Cancer Treatment Center Miami, Florida

CyberKnife Miami is a free-standing outpatient cancer treatment center that uses state-of-the-art image-guided radiosurgery treatments to treat cancer and other medical issues requiring radiation.

Cyberknife offers painless radiation treatments, which can be an alternative to surgery. And because of CyberKnife’s unique image-guided precision, we can treat difficult cases, which may otherwise not be treatable or deemed inoperable.

The one-of-a-kind equipment design makes the CyberKnife system especially beneficial for treating larger tumors and lesions near sensitive structures because it better protects the surrounding healthy tissue.

That is because CyberKnife’s image-guided robotics can destroy tumors with pinpoint accuracy while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.

CyberKnife Miami opened its doors in 2003 and was the first CyberKnife center to open in the Southeast and the 11th center to open in the United States.

Having treated patients throughout Florida, the US, and abroad, CyberKnife Miami is an international destination for patients seeking CyberKnife treatment.

Since opening, we have treated thousands of patients for cancerous and non-cancerous tumors as well as nerve disorders.

We treat brain, breast, lung, kidney, spine, pancreas, liver, prostate, and head and neck tumors. We also treat lymphoma and other conditions in the body where radiation treatment is necessary.

As an outpatient procedure, CyberKnife radiosurgery also allows for a better quality of life during and after treatment, which enables you to immediately resume your normal activities.

Our goal is to give you back the life you know and love!

Our doctors and staff are experts in the field.  Their compassion and personalized treatment can be the difference you need.
