Earlier Detection: “The most transformative impact we could have on cancer care would be to prevent cancer from happening in the first place,” said Avrum Spira, MD, a professor of medicine, pathology and laboratory medicine, and bioinformatics at the Boston University School of Medicine and global head of the Lung Cancer Initiative at Johnson & Johnson, according to the American Association for Cancer Research.
Doctors like Spira are studying how to better detect early stages of lung cancer and halt the disease from progressing.
CAR T Cells: According to the National Cancer Institute, researchers are using CAR T Cells to treat more cancers. This type of treatment genetically alters the T or immune cells of cancer patients. The altered cells are called chimeric antigen receptors or CARs. They can kill cancer cells. According to the journal, Nature, two of the first patients to receive CAR T-cell treatments remain in remission after 12 years.
Other Notable Advances: According to University of Texas at Dallas, a new molecule created by UTD researchers kills hard-to-treat cancers like triple-negative breast cancer. It does so by exploiting a weakness in cells not previously targeted by therapeutics.
The ClevelandClinic is heavily involved in research on PSMA-targeted therapy for prostate cancer. PSMA is an antigen found on the surface of prostate cancer cells.
According to Forbes, a GlaxoSmithKline drug is showing promise for rectal cancer. In a trial, all 12 patients given the drug experienced complete remission without chemotherapy or surgery. And other drugs are showing promise for lung cancer as well.
