Round Up of 2022’s Largest Cancer Advances

by | Oct 18, 2022 | Cancer Research

The battle against cancer is a marathon, not a sprint. And everyday doctors, researchers and scientists make discoveries that ultimately help treat and save the lives of patients worldwide.

The experts at the CyberKinfe Center of Miami, the premier cancer treatment center in Miami which provides state-of-the-art radiation therapy, want you to know some of the latest cancer advances of 2022.

Precision Oncology: According to the World Economic Forum precision oncology is the “best new weapon to defeat cancer,” the chief executive of Genetron Health, Sizhen Wang, says. Precision oncology can provide personalized treatments, which could mean fewer side effects and less harm to healthy cells.

Artificial Intelligence: The World Economic Forum also reports that AI and machine learning can help with risk profiling and early diagnosis in cancers like breast cancer.

New Ways to Biopsy: Biopsies are invasive and can be risky, but they are also necessary so pathologists can look at potential cancers in a lab. The World Economic Forum also reports that doctors are looking at liquid biopsies from blood samples, and synthetic biopsies for early stages of cancers.

Earlier Detection: “The most transformative impact we could have on cancer care would be to prevent cancer from happening in the first place,” said Avrum Spira, MD, a professor of medicine, pathology and laboratory medicine, and bioinformatics at the Boston University School of Medicine and global head of the Lung Cancer Initiative at Johnson & Johnson, according to the American Association for Cancer Research.

Doctors like Spira are studying how to better detect early stages of lung cancer and halt the disease from progressing.

CAR T Cells: According to the National Cancer Institute, researchers are using CAR T Cells to treat more cancers.  This type of treatment genetically alters the T or immune cells of cancer patients. The altered cells are called chimeric antigen receptors or CARs. They can kill cancer cells. According to the journal, Nature, two of the first patients to receive CAR T-cell treatments remain in remission after 12 years.

Other Notable Advances: According to University of Texas at Dallas, a new molecule created by UTD researchers kills hard-to-treat cancers like triple-negative breast cancer. It does so by exploiting a weakness in cells not previously targeted by therapeutics.

The ClevelandClinic is heavily involved in research on PSMA-targeted therapy for prostate cancer. PSMA is an antigen found on the surface of prostate cancer cells.

According to Forbes, a GlaxoSmithKline drug is showing promise for rectal cancer. In a trial, all 12 patients given the drug experienced complete remission without chemotherapy or surgery. And other drugs are showing promise for lung cancer as well.

Balancing Daily Advances and Treatments that Work

Keep in mind, the science of studying cancer changes rapidly. And while there are new advances on what seems like a daily basis, cancer patients need to make sure their choosing current treatment options that can help them right now.

That’s where the experts at CyberKnife Miami can help.

Cancer Treatment Center Miami

CyberKnife Miami uses state-of-the-art targeted radiation therapy to successfully treat cancer and other medical issues requiring radiation.

The CyberKnife’s, robotic arm delivers stronger doses of radiation, safely, quickly and effectively to tumors, destroying them, so treatment can be done in much less time than with other types of radiation technology.

So instead of 35 or 42 rounds of radiation over several months, CyberKnife often requires only one to five treatments and that makes a big difference in the lives of our patients.

They can get their cancer treated just as effectively, but in a much shorter period of time, which means they can get on with their normal daily lives.

At CyberKnife Miami we treat spine, brain, breast, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, prostate and head and neck tumors. We also treat lymphoma and other conditions in where radiation treatment is necessary

CyberKnife can be a great alternative to surgery. And because of CyberKnife’s advanced technology, we can treat difficult cases, which otherwise may not be treatable or are deemed inoperable.

That is just part of what sets us apart from other cancer treatment centers in Miami and South Florida.

Just as important, we know how difficult it is to hear the words, “you have cancer.”

Our compassionate team will do everything they can to help you and your family get through it as easily and quickly as possible while at the same time providing safe, effective treatment.

We hold your hand every step of the way.
