I recently returned from the Caribbean Neurological Association, at their 13th Annual Caribbean Neurosciences Congress and Symposium in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where I had been invited again to give a talk on SRS using the Cyberknife on January 29, 2015. CyberKnife Center of Miami was also proud to be a Bronze sponsor of the event.
We’ve enjoyed a very good professional relationship with the Jamaican medical community, particularly the neurosurgeons. Because of our location, we consider ourselves an important treatment asset for Caribbean patients.
During my presentation, I discussed the latest consensus on the use of CyberKnife robotic-arm, image-guided SRS for not only the panoply of conditions we typically deal with, such as primary brain tumors, metastatic brain tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, acoustic neuroma, as well as the use of new potential CyberKnife indications, such facet rhizotomy.
The Caribbean area poses some unique problems for patients with complex medical issues. Most patients live on islands which, while having significant populations, still lack the critical population mass necessary for complex medical care. In addition, unlike mainland patients in isolated communities, travel to appropriate treatment resources is often difficult and expensive.
The relatively short workup, planning, and treatment time required for CyberKnife treatment, as well as accuracy and patient-friendly and painless immobilization in comparison to competing techniques, make our facility and technology an attractive choice for Caribbean patients.
CyberKnife Center of Miami can often offer a very attractive alternative to these patients, with convenient, efficient, and effective treatment. We can involve the referring professionals in the treatment planning process, which improves both our doctors’ understanding of the condition and gives the referring doctor an understanding of the procedure necessary for effective follow-up care locally.
I had ample opportunity to discuss the issues of delivering care in the Caribbean with many of my professional colleagues in Jamaica, and look forward to continuing our long and effective relationship with these caregivers of the Caribbean.
